There have always been software mechanics.

Back in the days of local software that weren't cloud apps, you needed tech support significantly more.

Cloud software and hermetically sealed apps are more likely to stay working… at the cost of much less user agency and combinatorial power.

Software mechanics have also been necessary for some complex enterprise software that are horizontal systems of record, like Salesforce.

But now with the rise of bespoke software, we'll see it in more personal scenarios again.
