  • A pattern I use to make decisions in ambiguity: abduct a rubric out of my head.
    • Let's say I need to choose between multiple options.
    • I introspect and try to figure out the dimensions that matter the most to me.
    • I then extract those dimensions into a column in a spreadsheet with either a continuous variable or a bucket (with a weight for each bucket).
    • I then try to introspect about my intuitive weighting of those factors and abduct a ranking function across those factors.
    • Then I put a bunch of items in, and see what ranking comes out.
    • If the ranking "feels" wrong I try to figure out what's off.
      • Perhaps a missing dimension.
      • Perhaps the weighting of a factor is wrong.
    • Then, I just keep doing this iteratively, putting in more options and tweaking the rubric until I have a final choice I feel good about.[vm]
    • The rubric doesn't tell me how to think, it helps me sharpen and engage with my intuition.
    • I wish I had tools that would help me do this process!
