When two land masses combine the animals from the smaller land mass tend to lose out.

This is because they're less able to handle change.

They had an easier competition to win that never pushed them as hard as the animals on the bigger land mass.

In an evolutionary environment, you're only pushed as far as competition takes you.

Less competition pushes you less hard.
