  • Abducting behavior in escape hatches is an auto-steering product strategy.
    • The basic approach:
      • 1) Create an escape hatch that only savvy users will go into.
      • 2) Watch what they do in the escape hatch.
      • 3) Help the less savvy users get that use case automatically.
    • The savvy users are exploring and finding good ideas, which are then sent back to everyone else.
    • Typically only a small number of users go "into the basement," and then everyone else benefits.
    • This can layer fractally up as many layers you want.
      • For each layer, the population in the hatch benefits everyone outside of the hatch.
      • Across multiple layers, the benefit to the above-the-hatch people compounds.
