In a gold rush, you grab random pieces and hope you'll strike it rich.

Landrush is grabbing territory that probably won't be profitable for a very very long time.

Early web was a landrush, then a brush fire cleared out most of it, and only the very hardy ones were left, and they could them dominate the empty territory.

With network effects, it's an order of magnitude easier to grab virgin territory than take territory from someone else.
