Chris Dixon's frame of Web evolution:

  • Chris Dixon's frame of Web evolution:
    • Web 1.0: Read Only.
    • Web 2.0: Read-Write… but owned by the aggregators.
    • Web 3.0: Read-Write-Own.
    • I like the progression, but think the "own" does not necessarily imply "crypto."
    • The point is that the users should co-own the benefit of the network instead of it being owned by the host.
    • Today crypto is only one way to do that, but it's an approach with non-trivial downsides.
      • Hyper-financializing everything accelerates Goodhart's law.
    • What if there were other ways to get a Web 3.0 that was read/write/own, but without crypto?
