Cults must have purity tests to function.

The group believes something that the rest of the world does not believe–and that also might be directly contradicted by evidence.

That means if there's anyone on the bus who doesn't believe the group's mythos, it dilutes the whole enterprise or threatens to explode it.

So cults evolve behavior to demand purity tests and ruthlessly cast out anyone who fails them.
