Extremely simple, massively used protocols exist.

But most protocols fail by being either too simple to coordinate in an interesting way or so bloated that they never get off the ground.

There's an existence proof that it's possible to balance on that knife's edge, to find explosive growth with simplicity^[abq], but that doesn't mean it's easy to do.

It's an emergent process with selection pressure, very hard to do by design.
