Google Search as a centralized service felt somewhat less scary to me than ChatGPT.

But why?

Both could have outsize impact from just a bit of bias given their scale.

Google Search didn't have much individual state, whereas ChatGPT has significant amounts of state.

A tool without state is easier to leave than a tool with state.

Also, a non-personalized tool is easier to audit at scale.
