LLMs are additive for consumers and possibly subtractive for employees.

· Bits and Bobs 3/2/26
  • LLMs are additive for consumers and possibly subtractive for employees.
    • LLMs are abundant cognitive labor.
    • Consumers never had the resources to dispatch cognitive labor on their behalf, so extra labor is fully additive.
    • Companies, however, have long paid employees to be cognitive labor.
    • Now LLMs can displace some of that labor, which is subtractive by default.
      • Especially with the default "do what we do now but more cheaply" mindset of enterprises.
      • Compare to a "what new things can we do now?" mindset.
