The option to extract in an ecosystem is what impedes growth.
"We'll just reserve the option to extract from these 5 layers of the future system"
But people when deciding to join an ecosystem without a lot of momentum yet implicitly ask themselves, "what's the chance that something happens where I later regret having jumped in?"
A system that, by design, resists over-extraction (e.g. where no entity controls the root of trust), will grow significantly faster than alternatives.
