Why are so many words based in Latin?

· Bits and Bobs 9/15/26
  • Why are so many words based in Latin?
    • Because it is a schelling point.
    • For a word to emerge and settle in common usage, everyone who hears it has to agree that it sounds legitimate.
      • No one has to love it, but nearly everyone has to think it's plausible.
    • Everyone agreed that latin-based words are refined and legitimate.
    • That meant they got a head start on other random words trying to emerge.
