· Bits and Bobs 3/2/26
  • Why doesn't Apple seem to optimize for short term engagement as much as other big tech companies?
    • Other companies have cloud services that make money based on usage.
      • The more usage, the more ads are seen, the more money they make.
    • That means other companies are incentivized to optimize engagement.
      • This leads to addictive patterns and chasing metrics.
    • Apple, in contrast, only really wants you to buy another Apple device when you're in the market for one.
      • The purchase is lumpy and infrequent.
      • What matters most is trust.
      • Does the user trust that purchasing another Apple device will be worth it?
    • Apple doesn't care how much you use your iPhone… as long as you use it enough to value it and thus want to buy another one when you're in the market for one.
