Time to whisper and gossip in a friendly way with everyone.

To come to see collaborators as competent people in problem domains more complex than you realized, not as tactical, incompetent obstacles.

They're expensive, a release valve of kayfabe. One of the first things that orgs tighten.

"We don't need these boondoggles".

They have to be fun enough that people are willing to ask their spouse to let them stay away for a night.

Far enough away that people can't slip back home.

The whole point is being there overnight in a low key environment together, and perhaps having a few drinks.
