If you don't put both things on the opposite ends of the scale then it can't possibly be correctly balanced.

    • It will tip to one side as though the other side doesn't matter at all.
    • Optimization is not an unalloyed good.
    • Like all things, it has downsides.
    • The downsides are just more indirect and hard to measure.
