The cost of code is partially writing it and partially maintaining it.

It used to be that writing it was so costly that it dominated the cost of maintaining.

But now the cost of writing it is so low that the cost of maintaining, on a relative basis, dominates.

That means that sometimes checking in code is a liability–now you have to keep it up to date.
