There's never a good time to decentralize.

· Bits and Bobs 4/27/26
  • There's never a good time to decentralize.
    • This is especially true if you're the powerful central actor.
    • A decentralized and open system will typically run hotter for the same amount of functionality.
      • The compounding network effects get stronger because every marginal new participant now has fewer reasons to not join.
      • The "hmmmm if I join I'll be beholden to this ever-more-powerful feudal lord, maybe I shouldn't…" doesn't exist.
    • The reason that there's never a good time to decentralize is the same reason there's never a good time to plant a tree.
    • The short term has a significant cost and the overwhelming value doesn't happen until much later.
    • This is the reason modern society optimizes for Gilded Turds over Grubby Truffles.
