Your files aren't in Obsidian.

· Bits and Bobs 3/30/26
  • Your files aren't in Obsidian.
    • Obsidian helps you view and edit your knowledgebase, but the files are just readable files on your filesystem.
    • That means that you can have confidence you could leave Obsidian if you ever wanted to.
    • That credible exit means you don't have to worry about the incentives of Obsidian's creators.
    • That makes it an emergent schelling point for an ecosystem.
      • No one finds Obsidian's control to be a deal-breaker, because it structurally does not have any.
        • Arguably it would have even less if it were open source, but it's already so much smaller compared to cloud-hosted services that it doesn't really matter.
      • That makes it a natural centerpoint for everyone to rally around.
