My four-year-old son has become increasingly funny.
It started as a slight thing we noticed, but as he approaches his 4th birthday, it's becoming impossible to ignore that he's funny and goes out of his way to be funny.
How much is that intrinsic personality revealing itself as he matures, and how much is the environment pulling it out of him?
His personality looks like it's something pushing up on its own but it's actually also being abducted.
Imagine the mechanism.
When he's very young he does something small that's funny and we respond with delight.
When he does it again, other people do, since now he's funny, and it generates even more delight.
So he keeps on doing it, trying out different things to see what gets a laugh.
It keeps on iteratively growing, pulling it up, abducting it, and accreting, and then ossifying into a personality.
