When everyone else around you sucks, the bar to clear to be obviously better than everyone is very low.
Someone who is better will be a schelling point that many agree is obviously better.
That doesn't have to be that much better in the grand scheme of things if everyone else is obviously worse.
The thing that makes something more obviously the right option (and thus the thing that will become the schelling point) is not the absolute amount of quality, it's how obvious it is that it's different.
This is related but distinct!
Being higher absolute quality will tend to make it more obvious that it's higher quality, but not always.
