  • Mass protests erupt when there's a general anger simmering and then an inciting incident causes a cascade.
    • The inciting incident forms a schelling point that has to stand out as obviously beyond the pale to get to the critical mass where the compounding anger can accumulate on its own.
    • But a flood the end zone with shit strategy aims for a confusing background mess.
    • Nothing stands out as obviously the thing to coordinate around because there's lots of candidates.
    • It's like a three stooge syndrome model of gumming up coordination.
    • Coordination happens not due to the absolute magnitude of the signal but the prominence of it, the differential strength of it compared to alternatives.
    • The one bit of good news is that if the anger is strong enough a cascade is inevitable, just hard to predict when it will explode onto the scene.
