    • If you're not an owner you only pay attention to the part you are responsible for and assume the rest is taken care of.
    • That can leave significant cracks that can cause the whole thing to not cohere or even fall apart.
    • The various parts have to be close enough to work together.
      • At least loosely held before the gaps fill in.
    • This nests, fractally.
      • Within a whole, there are various parts, and likely cracks between them.
      • All else equal, gaps will form.
      • People intuitively leave space for their neighbors.
        • They don't want to step on each other's toes.
        • Also, operating in overlapping spaces requires coordination, which is expensive, so people would prefer avoiding it and won't bother if it's not something they are actively focusing on.
